Is Facebook watching you?

Do you ever get the feeling you’re being watched? With Halloween fast approaching, it doesn’t take much to get the hairs on the back of our necks standing up. But can you feel the cold breath of someone on the back of your neck? Don’t get goosebumps just yet, as it’s probably just Facebook! With more and more news coming to light about the frightening amount of data that social networks collect, it’s understandable that people are becoming wary.

Like a creepy Santa Claus, Facebook knows when you've been bad or good. Before you all start hitting the deactivate button on your Facebook profiles, it's worth remembering that Facebook doesn't disclose your name or specific information about you to advertisers. An advertiser won't be able to put a face to the data. Whilst it seems just a tad creepy that Facebook has all of this information on you, it does mean that you'll benefit from seeing more relevant content rather than ads that aren't applicable to you.

It’s no secret that Facebook has stalking skills that are capable of turning Liam Neeson's character in Taken green with envy. Yet, even though the specific ways in which Facebook can target you are terrifying, it also gives businesses a great opportunity to find the right customer. As well as providing our clients with a web design service to attract customers, our digital team also offers a full social media management service that helps to continue targeting and tracking customers. As such, we thought we'd take a look at some of the creepiest things that Facebook allows them to target.

Your relationship

Remember the days when relationships were about two people in the first throes of romance? Those days are gone. Facebook is now the third wheel you didn't ask for. Advertisers can target users based on their relationship status. Facebook also categorises people into those who are in new relationships, newly engaged of even newly married. There's a silver lining to this though for any forgetful souls out there; Facebook will remember your anniversary even when you forget!

Facebook knows where you live

Admittedly, this one is a little bit scary! However, Facebook uses your location to tailor adverts to you. Maybe there’s a great spa deal in that new hotel that’s just opened in town, or perhaps your nearest airport has introduced flights to cool new locations. These are the types of things which consumers would want to know about. Yet, Facebook knows more than just your location. It can also find out your home ownership and type, the value of your property and even the square footage of your home.

Family values and mind control

Using the information it has on you, Facebook can start to figure out your family relationships. It'll then use the power of AI to try and influence your decisions as a group rather than as individuals.

If you need help tracking down your customers, get in touch with our team today. We promise to create adverts that'll make them pleased to have been found!
