back to the future day 2015

Great Scott! It’s October 21st 2015 already… which, for those of you who didn’t already know, means it’s Back to the Future Day.
Admittedly, we’re a little disappointed that we’ve yet to see Marty and Doc come hurtling into the Uprise car park in a Deloran at 88mph, but we’re patient souls so we’ll give them a little while longer. Who knows how bad traffic is in a wormhole?! Until then, we thought we’d get our futuristic fix in a different way. Strap into our very own Uprise DeLorean and we’ll take you on a journey to explore the best Back to the Future inspired advertisements; sit tight because where we’re going, we don’t need roads…
After securing some of the best product placement in history during the original film, Pepsi were obviously tipped to do something big for Back to the Future day. They haven’t disappointed with their release of Pepsi Perfect which will be available for a limited time.
Unfortunately, Pepsi Perfect isn’t quite the vitamin infused drink that the film boasted. In fact, it’s just regular pepsi in a limited edition collector’s case, but just look how futuristic it looks! Who wants vitamins when you can have copious amounts of sugar anyway?
In the film’s 2015, Marty sees an advert for a holographic 3D film called Jaws 19. Universal was the studio behind the Back To The Future series as well as the Jaws franchise, so this was a light-hearted jibe to the recently flopped Jaws 4 and the recognition that studios didn’t know when to call it a day with sequels. However, in a twist of fate, Universal did recently release a trailer of sorts for Jaws 19, which counted down through the previous 18 instalments. This may have just been a joke to celebrate the rerelease of the Back to the Future trilogy but, despite Jaws 19 not getting a release anytime soon, the mock trailer for it has been viewed over 1.5 million times so far.
Let’s face it, Universal were going to go out of their way to celebrate Back to the Future, especially given their success. Universal teased this mock advertisement for a hoverboard at the start of the month, and I’m unashamed to admit that for a brief, yet euphoric moment, I believed that this was actually real. Sadly, hoverboards aren’t quite here yet, but the day of the hoverboard looms ever closer according to Lexus who’ve recently announced that they’ve created a floating board which has R&D backing. This board, dubbed ‘the slide’ floats just above metal surfaces by using liquid nitrogen superconductors and permanent magnets amongst a bunch of other scientific stuff. Basically, all you need to know is that the age of the hoverboard is nigh! Let’s just take a moment to appreciate that.
Mercedes have paid tribute to Doc Brown and Marty McFly in their latest television ads which showcase their futuristic autonomous vehicles. Whilst these vehicles might not be the flying cars that we expected, they can drive around without any direct driver input.
The adverts are short but sweet, and centre around iconic Back to the Future inventions such as hoverboards and dog walking drones. Each advert concludes with the simple yet effective message ‘Thanks for inspiring our engineers, Doc. Happy Back to the Future Day.”
When you think about it, the futuristic concepts explored in Back to the Future’s 2015, like the McFly’s multi-screen TV, weren’t quite as outlandish as they might have been considered. Now, all we need is a mass fax-machine revival and the introduction of rehydrated pizzas to be living in Robert Zemeckis’ imagined 2015.
